FSIS Reports Codex Pesticide Residue Committee Discussed MRLs, Fruit Classification, Etc.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service said the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) held its 44th Session on April 23-28 in Shanghai, China. FSIS said about 300 representatives from 182 countries and regions attended the meeting. According to FSIS, the Session resulted in the following:

- Advanced close to 400 maximum residue limits (MRLs) for 30 pesticides, which will be submitted for adoption by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) when it meets July 2-7.
- Agreed to develop criteria for the use of the proportionality approach to derive maximum residue levels.
- Revised the risk analysis document and established an electronic working group to finalize the remaining sections, including the procedure for periodic evaluation.
- Agreed on a priority list of compounds for evaluation by the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR), an FAO/WHO expert body.
- Continued to support work on the pilot project and the national global joint review of the nominated compound, sufloxor.
- Advanced to the CAC for adoption the classification for the fruit commodity groups: citrus fruits, pome fruits, stone fruits, berries and small fruits and assorted tropical and subtropical fruits, edible and inedible peel.
- Returned work to an electronic working group to develop performance criteria for the suitability assessment of methods of analysis.
- Returned the draft discussion paper on MRLs for pesticides for minor crops and specialty crops for further work by the electronic working group to develop criteria to determine the number of field trials for MRLS for minor crops/specialty crops.
