Ted Mittelstaedt, founder of the San Francisco customs brokerage Mittelstaedt, Galaviz & Mylin, died Jan. 17 at the age of 92 after a brief illness, said his son Edward Mittlestaedt, who also is a customs broker. Ted was a Korean War veteran who got his customs broker license in 1957, MG&M said. He worked at the brokerage through early January.
Richard “Dick” Belanger, longtime and prominent customs lawyer, died Nov. 25 of cancer. He was 75. Belanger, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, began his career with the U.S. Customs Service before moving to Sharretts Paley, Powell Goldstein and then Sidley Austin, where he retired after 20 years.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, 72, died Aug. 5, and Democrats on both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue said they are mourning his loss. "I am shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Trumka, a fierce advocate for the rights and wellbeing of American workers," said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass. "I deeply valued his partnership as we passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a revolutionary trade deal for U.S. workers. ... He was an invaluable champion for those who make up the backbone of our economy and foundations of our communities."
Bill Brock, a U.S. trade representative during the Reagan administration, died March 25 at age 90 of pneumonia, according to published reports.
Court of International Trade Senior Judge Gregory Carman has died, CIT said. Carman was confirmed to the court in 1983, and was chief judge from 1996 to 2003. He assumed senior status in 2014. Carman was a member of the House of Representatives from New York for the two years prior to his appointment as a judge.
Wayne Wagner, senior manager for Brokerage Services at FedEx Logistics, died unexpectedly on July 8, the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America said in an email. Wagner was heavily involved in numerous industry groups and was a current board member of the NCBFAA. The NCBFAA said it will send out information about services for Wagner once finalized.
The administrator of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau died on May 25, according to a funeral home notice. John Manfreda became administrator in 2005, according to his Treasury Department bio. TTB didn't immediately return a request for comment.
Former journalist, congressional aide and public relations executive Bill Brobst, 82, of Odenton, Maryland, died on March 17 after battling Parkinson’s disease for seven years. He reported for The New York Times and worked in PR for Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind., and Rep. Allen Ertel, D-Pa. Later, Brobst joined Comsat, GTE and Scientific Atlanta in PR. In retirement, Brobst was a copy editor for International Trade Today. He's survived by his wife, son, daughter and two brothers. A memorial service is planned for April 13 in Odenton.
