The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced its determination of nonregulated status for Monsanto sugar beets genetically engineered for tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate. This variety is commonly referred to as Roundup Ready sugar beets, APHIS said. The sugar beets will no longer be considered a regulated article under APHIS’ regulations governing the introduction (importation, interstate movement, or release into the environment) of organisms and products altered or produced through genetic engineering that are plant pests or that there is reason to believe are plant pests. CBP's ACE team is continuing to work with the International Trade Data System (ITDS) and Office of Field Operations (OFO) to determine which forms will be added for use within the Document Image System (DIS), which is now in the first phase of a pilot. CBP released a series of questions and answers on the program. Phase 1 of DIS include documents for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and National Marine Fisheries Service/ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NMFS/NOAA). CBP released more details on the trade fair in Seattle scheduled for July 19. CBP has invited government agencies that regulate trade to participate, it said. There's no registration necessary, though IDs will be required.
Geoffrey Powell, vice president of the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America, will be among the panelists on Pest Exclusion and Outreach at the July 17-18 APHIS Agriculture Stakeholder Conference. As a member of Treasury’s COAC group, Powell chaired an Agriculture Subcommittee that addressed some of the needs of APHIS stakeholders and will speak on how that subcommittee worked with APHIS/CBP to reach out to the stakeholders via on-line questionnaires on topics such as visibility of data, exam issues, and delays to cargo, among others, NCBFAA said.
