President Trump, after saying tariff decisions on China would wait until he had talks with that country's president, returned to his previous stance in favor of the tariffs. He made the comments at a White House press conference Jan. 21.
President Donald Trump told reporters that his administration is still thinking of imposing 25% tariffs on both Mexican and Canadian goods "because they're allowing vast numbers of people -- Canada's a very bad abuser also -- vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in. I think we'll do it February 1st."
The U.S. Department of Energy is adopting new and amended energy conservation standards for commercial refrigeration equipment. DOE says the new and amended energy conservation standards would result "in significant conservation of energy and are technologically feasible and economically justified." This final rule is effective March 18. Commercial refrigerators, freezers and refrigerator freezers must be compliant with the final rule starting on Jan. 22, 2029, DOE said in a Federal Register notice.

The International Trade Commission has ended a Section 337 investigation on imported photovoltaic connectors (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-1365), it said in a Federal Register notice to be published Jan. 21. Complainant Shoals Technologies Group initially alleged in 2023 that Hikam, a California-based photovoltaic cable company, and Hewtech, a Chinese electronics firm, along with their affiliated companies, were importing photovoltaic connectors for solar panels that infringe two of Shoals' patents (see 2306080003).
The International Trade Commission is beginning a Section 337 investigation on mobile electronic devices (ITC Inv. No. 337-TA-1432) after receiving allegations filed by Maxell that Samsung and its subsidiaries are importing products that infringe its patents, the agency said in a Jan. 17 news release.

The FDA is requiring certain manufacturers of cat and dog foods to reanalyze their food safety plans to include the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus (specifically H5N1) as a known or reasonably foreseeable hazard. The virus is popularly known as bird flu.
