The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Brazil has announced that Senator John McCain and Senator John Barrasso will travel to Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Panama, and Mexico from January 7-14, 2011 to review Latin American efforts in fighting criminal gangs and drug traffickers, and will stress the need for Congress to pass free trade agreements with Panama and Colombia.
Mexico's Secretary of the Economy has issued a press release announcing that Mexico is analyzing the U.S. cross-border trucking proposal that was recently presented to the Mexican government. According to the Secretary, Mexico is looking for a permanent and satisfactory agreement that will provide certainty to the Mexican carriers. The Government of Canada has issued regulations restricting six phthalates in vinyl parts of toys and certain childcare articles. The new regulations will take effect six months after they are registered, or on approximately June 10, 2011.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Gates stated that the U.S. and China have agreed to cooperate on a number of joint military activities, including anti-piracy, counter-terrorism, maritime issues, etc., after a meeting on January 10, 2011. Gates also stated that China would consider the beginning of a strategic security dialog covering nuclear, missile defense, space, and cyber issues. Gates will continue to meet with Chinese officials through January 12, 2011.
